The Friends of Brooker Creek Preserve want to ensure that Brooker Creek Preserve remains a natural and wild place for future generations of Pinellas County citizens.

The current system of land use and zoning has not provided the necessary protection to prevent preserve land from being set aside for non-preserve use. Various portions of the preserve have been converted to non-preserve uses. Further non-preserve uses have been proposed and have met with resistance from the community. Fortunately, the county government has heard our collective voices and withdrawn or relocated the three most recent proposals. We need a plan that will protect the preserve so this doesn’t continue to happen.

The Friends are urging the leaders of Pinellas County to adopt an amendment to the county charter requiring a public referendum to change land use within preserve boundaries, or some other plan that would accomplish our intended goal of protecting the preserve in perpetuity, while still allowing for the management of the land.
